Canon Powershot D10 Review
You can take this camera practically anywhere: waterproof up to 33 feet underwater, can withstand temperatures between 4-104 degrees Fahrenheit, and shockproof up to 4 feet. It has excellent resolution and gives you flexibility in editing. With 12.1 megapixels plus 3X Optical Zoom and optical image stabilizer, you are assured to have well-detailed pictures and less fuzzy shots.
You get perfect focus every time you shoot, as well as, nice looking faces. Powershot D10 uses DIGIC 4, Canon's most advanced image processor. It has evolved Face Detection technology that automatically looks for the faces of your moving subjects and delivers the perfect focus giving your photos a clarity and proper exposure. The DIGIC 4 includes a face detection self-timer, I-Contrast, Red Eye correction, and ISO 1600/3200 capability.
No more pictures with closed eyes. The camera is equipped with Blink Detection, which alerts the picture taker if there are close eyes in the picture allowing him/her to retake the shot before the subjects move. The camera picks the right settings for you. Set your Powershot D10 to smart AUTO and click you way to the best pictures of your most memorable adventures. The Advance Canon technology will intelligently pick the best settings for you in whatever situation and shooting condition you will be in.
The first time you look at the Powershot D10, you might not think of adventure. But if you look inside this camera, you will find out that this is powered by one of the most advanced technologies in digital cameras.
For a camera, the Powershot D10 would be a bit bulgy but this is just because there is a need for an extra shell to seal the lens inside. This is way smaller and cheaper than buying a waterproof housing for a camera with a comparable size and specification. The standard face color is turquoise blue, but you can replace it, if you buy an accessory kit. It has a 2.5 inch LCD screen. You can put the supplied wrist strap in any of the 4 corners of the camera. This innovative connection system is very convenient when you purchase the additional items like the carabineer, neck, and shoulder straps.
All control buttons are located at the top and back of the camera. Canon uses buttons for this model because it is easier to seal buttons compared to switches and dials. Compared to other Canon Powershots, the power button in the D10 is larger and is quite fit for wet conditions or with gloves. It would take some time to get used to the shutter buttons, especially during underwater shots. You have to press a little bit longer to get to the stage where it captures the picture. If you have used a Canon Powershot before, you will not have a hard time figuring out the controls. The D10?s user interface is easy to understand.
The Canon Powershot D10 has a Smart AUTO mode that will automatically set the scene modes of your pictures from 18 different settings. This feature is very convenient in rugged situations because you do not need to change and adjust your settings every time you shoot. For people who like some semblance of control, there is also a Program mode that will allow you to pick the ISO setting, white balance, light metering, focus, and color effects. There is also the typical list of scene modes to choose from with the addition of the underwater setting. The camera can also record video at 30 frames per second.
The D10 is quicker than average cameras in the same category. It will only take around 1 second from start-up to shooting your first picture. The shot to shot times and shutter lag is above average.
After capturing moments of your life with this camera, you have a variety of options in viewing, and managing your images. You can view up to 9 thumbnails, organize photos by date, time, category, file type, and folder, view slideshows, resize, rotate, delete, and many other options including editing like Red-eye correction, i-Contrast, and MyColors.
The photo quality for Powershot D10 is very satisfactory. There are a few issues noise and loss of detail above ISO 100. The camera though performs extremely well in low light conditions and this can be attributed to the anti-shake feature of the D10. The maximum shutter speed is 15 seconds in the Long Shutter mode, which is really useful in night photography. You can focus as close as 2 centimeters away from the subject in the Macro setting. At the default sharpening setting, the images will come out a bit soft specially at the edges, but this can be easily remedied by using photo-editing applications or by adjusting the in-camera settings.
- Durable. It is a camera that is fit for rugged situations. If you are the type that loves to go for extreme adventure, this is your suitable camera. You can take this camera 10 meters underwater. This can survive extreme cold. Plus the Canon Powershot D10 is shockproof.
- Size. It is a good size and can easily fit your backpack or bag, whether you are going for a trek in the Himalayas or snorkeling in the Caribbean.
- Ease of use. The Canon Powershot D10 has a user-friendly interface and can be operated easily in underwater or in extreme situations.
- Expensive. The Powershot D10 would be a bit expensive if you are just looking for an everyday point and shoot camera. The D10 accessory kit costs another $130.
- No water damage warranty. There have been cases that the camera leaks or malfunctions, while being operated underwater. Canon warranty does not cover water damage.
The Canon Powershot D10 is an outstanding compact underwater camera. You can expect to have amazing shots every time you click the D10 with the help of the technologies available for the Powershot family. A word of warning though, while the D10 is built for underwater conditions, you should not test it beyond its depth limits because Canon does not offer warranty on water damage.
You buy this camera if you spend a lot of time going on adventures that would need the D10?s extra features like freeze-proof, waterproof, shockproof, and dust proof. If you just need a regular point and shoot compact camera, this will come out too expensive. This would be cool though, if you spend lot of time in the beach or snow. A lot of people will be amazed with the images that the Powershot D10 takes. The Canon Powershot D10 is perfect for people with a more active and adventurous lifestyle.
