Nikon Coolpix L110 Review
The Nikon Coolpix L110 is one of the powerful yet simple cameras in Nikon's Coolpix Life series. This series promises to deliver a lot of photographic functions in an easy to use package. Best of all, it is perfect for budget conscious users as the price is very affordable. With the Coolpix series, Nikon brings its long experience in photography and digital imaging into the compact digital camera. Below are the Coolpix L110's interesting features.
The Nikon Coolpix L110 is a superzoom digital camera offering 15x optical zoom with its wide angle Nikkor glass lens. This is equivalent to a focal length of 28 - 420mm on a 35mm camera. Having a lens like this will allow you to take wide landscape or group shots while easily fitting a large group inside the frame or use the zoom to get up close pictures of far away objects. It is perfect for taking stolen shots or candid pictures from afar. With a Nikkor lens, you are also assured to get clearer and sharper pictures brought about by Nikon's lens technology that's renowned worldwide. Based on our lab tests, the Coolpix L110 produces sharper images on the wide to moderate telephoto range. A little sharpness is loss at longer focal lengths. Overall though, we were impressed with the sharpness of the images especially at the center of the photo where it matters most.
The Coolpix L110 comes with a 12.1 megapixel sensor and is powered by Nikon's EXPEED image processing. At this resolution, you would be able to print images as large as 16 x 20 inches. The images are of very good quality for this camera's price range although they don't come close to those produced by digital SLRs. This is normal for a reasonably priced compact digital camera. Regardless, the images are perfect for printing 4 x 6 photo prints or for low resolution web and email publishing.
A function we dearly love with the Coolpix L110 is its capability to record movies in high definition quality. This camera can record videos in 720p HD format. What we truly love about this function is the fact that you can still use the zoom while recording movies. Auto focus continues to work as well while recording and it records in stereo sound. The resulting videos therefore are way better than those recorded with a low end camcorder. This makes the camera more than suitable to record not only still images but everyday videos as well.
Using an AA Lithium battery will allow you to shoot 840 shots before the battery runs out. This is a very handy feature to have when you are used to shooting all day long. The battery life makes this camera perfect to bring along your travels around the world. And since the camera supports AA sized batteries, it would be easy to replace the battery as well when you're outdoors. This accessibility however makes the camera a little bulky than most point-and-shoot cameras, making it not as handy as smaller and slimmer models.
Surprisingly for a superzoom camera, the Coolpix L110 offers lesser control and functionality compared to competing models from other makers. While other superzoom cameras offer flexibility and control similar or close to functions that can be found in digital SLRs, the Coolpix L110 has kept controls simple for ease of use. This is probably due to its small sensor which would limit the quality anyway.
Adding to the ease of use is the presence of an Auto and Easy Auto shooting mode. In the Easy Auto shooting mode, the camera's auto selection feature automatically selects the best settings for any situation. The camera also comes with 13 scene modes namely: Portrait, Landscape, Night portrait, Party/Indoor, Beach/Snow, Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, Night Landscape, Close-up, Food, Museum, Copy, and Backlight. These scene modes can be readily selected by the user, depending on the shooting situation, to allow Nikon's technology to help the photographer come up with properly exposed pictures.
A most interesting feature for highly active users who are into sports is the Sport Continuous shooting mode which can shoot at a speed of up to 11 frames per second for up to 30 frames in a row. At this rate, you would easily be able to capture movement and action. The next time you're going out to play tennis or baseball, take this camera with you and capture photos of your serve or swing so you can analyze how to improve it.
Like most Coolpix cameras, the Coolpix L110 also comes with Nikon essentials that set the camera apart from its competitors. The camera is loaded with Nikon's Smart Portrait System for taking flawless portrait pictures all the time. It also comes with a 5-way Image Stabilization system to reduce blurry images and produce sharper images in any situation. It also supports 5 special filters so you can produce pictures in standard color, vivid color, black and white, sepia, and cyanotype.
As a final bonus, the Coolpix L110 boasts of a high resolution 3.0 inch Clear Color Display. With a 460,000 dot large screen, it is easier to compose and view pictures from your camera. You would then be able to check whether your pictures are focused properly right there and then. This will allow you to easily spot the mistake and retake the shot.

- Not as compact and handy
The Nikon Coolpix L110 offers good value for money. It captures great images and surprisingly better video recording capabilities. The same features can however be found in slimmer and more compact point-and-shoot cameras. Belonging to the superzoom category and looking like a digital SLR, we would have expected more flexibility and control similar to digital SLRs. Sadly, the Coolpix L110 lacks a bit in this department. Novice users who are only after taking great photos and taking advantage of the cameras 15x optical zoom will find this camera very useful. More advance users who would want more functionality might prefer more expensive alternatives in the same category. Overall, excellent image stabilization technology, good quality images, better than expected video quality, and the 15x optical zoom makes this camera well worth the cost.
