Nikon Coolpix L22 Review

Nikon Coolpix L22 is another great find for those who are looking for affordability and decent pictures. This 12 megapixel solid camera is run by two AA-sized batteries and comes in colors black, red and champagne silver colours. In addition to Nikon's Best Shot Selector, it also has the face and smile detection feature and Motion Detection and post-capture D-lighting technologies.

This classy looking camera is almost made of plastic but astoundingly looks solid, with no evidence of fragileness and inexpensiveness to it. The Nikon Coolpix L22 is a handy point and shoot and does not have the ordinary squarish design due to its mellowed curves. This excellent camera does not have a true hand grip but owing to the imperceptibly thicker right-hand side, your fingers have something to hold on to. On this same right-hand side is where the battery compartment is and makes room for the memory card. When opening the battery compartment or switching memory cards, one should be careful since the batteries have nothing to keep them in post once the door is unlocked.

The Nikon Coolpix L22 is powered by two AA sized batteries. This camera should be good for long trips or vacations since Nikon quotes that it can take up to 240 shots with the use of regular alkaline batteries. If using disposable lithium batteries, it can take up to 660 shots which makes it a decent camera when it comes to battery life.

If facing the lens, one can find the power button with the green LED encircling it on the upper left part. Also, from that same top plate is where the shutter release ringed by the zoom lever rests. When fronting the 3.0 inch screen, the neck strap eyelet is clearly visible on the right side which appears to be metal. The three inch LCD display takes over most of the back portion of the Nikon Coolpix L22. This three inch screen has a matte finish making it more classier. On the right side of the monitor are buttons that includes the Record and Playback buttons, standard four-way navigation pad with OK button at the center, then do not forget the Menu and Erase buttons which are very essential.

Another likeable detail of the L22 is that Playback button can also be used as a secondary power switch. Make sure to press the button long enough to turn the camera on and review the pictures you took. Nikon made a distressing design flaw by not able to get out of Playback mode just by pressing or tapping the shutter release like most of all of the basic cameras out there. The Record button delivers a comprehensible list of shooting modes comprising of Auto, Easy Auto, Movie, Smart Portrait and sixteen other scene modes which includes a panorama assist mode. Through the four-way pad , the macro mode, the self-timer, the flash modes and exposure compensation are instantly accessible.

The utmost aperture of the Nikon Coolpix L22 is F3.1 at the wide end and a draggy F6.7 at full telephoto. Once turned on, the lens of the camera extends in just about one second. By then, the camera is all braced up to take great pictures almost instantly after starting up. The Nikon Coolpix L22 has a 3.6x zoom lens that fords a 35mm equivalent focal range of approximately 37-134 mm. The lens goes from the camera's widest setting to full telephoto in just two seconds which is highly impressive. For this, we should thank the rather somewhat limited zoom range. Aside from the lens, the front panel quarters a tiny built-in flash, the self-timer/AF-assist lamp, a speaker and a microphone which functions to record sound with your movie clips.

The Nikon Coolpix L22 takes competent pictures keeping in mind that one should take shots in good lighting condition and the L22 applies a low ISO. If not, there is a chance of blurry and poor quality pictures. If one is particular with getting good picture quality, controlling ISO setting is a must have.

The strange thing about this camera is that there is no way of controlling the ISO setting taking note of the fact that this camera is current and most of its competitors has that feature already. However, you can change the settings for the image size, white balance and colour options and decide whether to take a single shot or shoot continuously. For enlightenment, it appears almost unfavorable for Nikon to have included a manual white balance option in the menu instead of the manual setting for ISO.

If it is regarding drive modes, the L22 can capture pictures continously with a rate of 0.09 frames/sec. In less than a second, the Coolpix L22 can take up to 16 photos using Multi-shot 16 mode. After taking the shots, it is integrated into a 5megapixel single image. There is less command over the picture-taking procedure when it comes to other shooting modes.

In Easy auto mode, there is a restriction with regard to setting the flash modes, exposure compensation, the settings of file quality including the self-timer. For the scene modes, there are more flash options or it allows the on and off option for macro mode but all in all, it has generally the same accessible settings as with Easy auto mode. The panorama assist feature is also available in this camera which is a great help in the construction of the next shot with a nice amount of overlap for easy editing on the computer. The Smart Portrait mode of Nikon employs smile and face detection to take images of smiling people.

The good thing about this feature is it fires off a shot once it detects smiling faces without any user interference. The L22 is not in HD when it comes to movie mode and has two resolution options, VGA and QVGA. Exposure compensation and optical zoom are not available for movies as well. Literally, the L22 applies to the meaning of "point and shoot."

You can also shoot videos with the Coolpix L22. It's better if you view a sample video to see the quality for yourself.
