Nikon Coolpix S8000 Review

The Coolpix S8000 belongs to Nikon's Coolpix Style series promising photographic control and flexibility in a compact and slim design. It also brings with it Nikon's Coolpix promise of easy to use controls for an enjoyable and fun-filled experience. Equipped with a 10x optical zoom Nikkor lens, this camera is great to take along while travelling. Here are some key features of the Coolpix S8000.

This 14.2 Megapixel compact digital camera will allow you to print photos as large as 20 x 30 inches. The sample photos we took live up to Nikon's long history and expertise in the photography world. The colors were accurate and the images were sharp. This camera definitely produces high quality images.

The Coolpix s8000 is also the thinnest camera with a 10x optical zoom lens. The lens, by the way, is a wide-angle Nikkor glass lens. This wide-angle lens is perfect for capturing expansive landscapes while the zoom capability allows you to close in on the action.

What we like best about this camera is its 3.0 inch high resolution color display. The LCD has a resolution of 921,000 dots which allows it to display the images and movies with a lot of detail and contrast. The LCD is large enough for easy composition and viewing of pictures.

The Coolpix S8000 also comes with Nikon's Smart Portrait System allowing you to take great portrait pictures. This shooting mode combines Nikon's Smile Timer and Blink Proof function, Blink Warning function, Red-Eye Fix function, Face Priority Auto focus function, and Skin Softening function in one mode. The camera automatically waits for your subjects to smile before taking the shot. It also automatically fires another shot if it detects that your subject may have blinked. While the Skin Softening function gives your subjects a fairer and smoother complexion. All cool features to have when taking portraits, especially when taking your child's portraits.

A minor setback in the Nikon Coolpix S8000 is its lack of semi-manual or manual exposure mode. Although this is not so important for the camera's intended market, more advanced users will miss this function. The camera does however allow you to control white balance and ISO sensitivity.

The Coolpix S8000 also comes with a great Image Stabilization system. Nikon's impressive Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization system helps eliminate picture blurring by reducing camera and hand shakes. It does this in 4 ways: Optical VR Image Stabilization, Motion Detection, High ISO sensitivity up to 3200, and Nikon's Best Shot Selection (BSS) function. Basically, the camera automatically sets the camera into the ideal shutter speed and ISO settings to achieve the best picture without blur while Nikon's BSS function takes up to 10 shots while the shutter is pressed and saves the sharpest image.

The controls and menus of the Coolpix S8000 are straightforward and easy to use. You shouldn't have a problem taking pictures with it right out from the box especially if you've used a digital camera before. With a 3.0 inch high resolution display, the menu items are easy to read and navigate through. The large display also makes composing and viewing images easier. The small control buttons at the back of the camera might be a problem for those with big fingers. As a general rule, we recommend that you test the camera to get a feel of the controls before buying it.

The Coolpix S8000 also comes with a built-in pop-up flash. We don't have any qualms with the flash, it works perfectly. We would have preferred a non pop-up flash though. Having the flash pop-up at the left side of the camera somehow interferes with your grip. It also makes it prone for your left hand to cover the flash while taking your pictures. The contoured thumb rest on the right though makes it easier to hold and take pictures using only your right hand.

Aside from taking still pictures, our team, just loves to take videos as well. Another cool thing we like about the Coolpix S8000 is its ability to record videos in 720p high definition with stereo sound recording. Although it's not Full HD resolution, 720p is more than enough for taking videos for special occasions and everyday use. A dedicated one-touch button used to start or stop video recording can also be found at the back of the camera making it easy to record videos instantly.

The Coolpix S8000 also does not come short when it comes to style. The metallic finish gives it a classy look. It comes in Red, Black, Champagne Silver, and Bronze.

Like any compact digital camera, the Coolpix S8000 also comes with an Auto Scene Selector and is capable of shooting in 16 different Scene modes. Noteworthy is the Sports Continuous Mode which jacks up the ISO sensitivity to 6400 and allows shooting at 3 frames per second. This can come in handy for taking pictures of fast moving objects.

It is perfect for general camera users who just love to point and shoot without having to worry about the right camera settings and all.
