Olympus Evolt E620 Review
The Olympus Evolt E620 is the latest DSLR from Olympus that belongs in the Four Thirds family. Using this new standard allows it to be highly mobile and compact while still producing high quality images. This camera is targeted for photography enthusiasts and advance-entry users. A quick break down of its interesting features is shown below.
The Olympus Evolt E620 is part of Olympus' E-System Digital SLRs that are designed with revolutionary features making digital photography more fun and interesting. It comes with a 12.3 Megapixel LIVE MOS sensor and is powered by Olympus' TruePic III+ processor to ensure professional looking images all the time. We took the camera on a test run and we were very satisfied with the results. The pictures were comparable in quality to those taken from DSRLs that rank higher and are more expensive than the Evolt E620.
For those of you who love to be creative, you'll enjoy the built-in Art Filters feature. There are six Art Filters to choose from namely: Grainy Film, Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale and Light Color, Light Tone, and Pin Hole. Now you can turn your pictures into works of art in an instant without having to use image editing softwares like Adobe Photoshop. Our team simply loved the Pop Art filter feature which super saturates the images and makes your pictures more vivid. The Pin Hole filter which darkened the edges of our pictures and brought the focus in the center was also very interesting.
Another good thing we loved about this DSLR is the 2.7 inch Live view LCD display that can be flipped and rotated up to 270 degrees. The Live view feature allows you to compose your pictures and see the image you want before actually taking it. Previously, this feature was only available in point-and-shoot cameras.
Older DSLR models didn't have this feature making them harder and more intimidating to use. Aside from the LIVE view feature, the Evolt E620 also comes with a swivel LCD display. This technology will allow you take pictures from different angles without having to bend down, to lie flat on the floor, or to be in any awkward position. Given this awesome feature, you can also now take your personal portraits without having to worry whether you're in the picture or not! This comes in very handy when you're travelling alone or simply when you need to take a quick shot and there's nobody around to take the photo for you.
The Evolt E620 is also the smallest and lightest DSLR in the market with built in Image Stabilization features. With this feature, your chances of taking blurry images are greatly lessened. This allows you to take better night photos and fast-moving action shots. This will also allow you to use different Four Third lenses without image stabilisation features, from wide-angle to telephoto, and still produce clear and crisp photos all the time. Lenses with Image stabilization functions are also more expensive. You can now therefore save more money by not having the need to buy these more expensive lenses anymore.
The E620 also comes with its own Face Detection technology. It can detect up to 8 faces per frame. Upon detection, it sets the focus on your subjects making them appear clear in the picture. Upon testing, we found this feature to be more than adequate having been able to detect the lovely faces of our team in everyday lighting conditions. So now you can guarantee that your subjects, and not the background, will be in focus.
One feature missing in the E620 that we hoped to have been included is video capture capability. We love to take videos as much as we love taking still photos. Two of its toughest competitors in the same price range, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i and the Nikon D5000, both support this feature. We hope that Olympus would include this feature in the next generation model of the E620.
Compared to competing models with simpler designs for easy access and control, another minor setback in the E620 is its use of the traditional button-based access controls which can be intimidating for first-time DSLR users. Although having said this, the controls are quite straightforward and anyone can get used to them in no time.
For those of you who are into the more technical details of the camera, you might be interested in these features: built-in dust reduction feature, built-in wireless electronic flashes compatible with the Olympus FL-50R and FL-36R, continuous shooting of up to 4 frames per second, 13 Scene select modes with 2 new underwater modes, 5 types of Metering modes, wide range of shutter speed from 2 seconds to 1/4000 of a second, a dual memory card support, and Multiple Exposure capabilities.
