Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 Review

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is the descendant of TS1 of the same brand. The TS2 is resistant to water, shock and dust elements making it a tough camera. Like its TS1 predecessor, the TS2 has the same features except for a few minor changes and adjustments. It does have now a higher resolution which is 14 megapixel, HD video capture, Power O.I.S. instead of Mega O.I.S, up-to-date shooting modes like HDR, and Happy Mode that instantly captures images with brilliant and more intense colors.

The TS2 is waterproof down to 33 feet, shockproof if dropped up to 6.6 feet, and up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit freezeproof putting it to the point of indestruction unlike with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1. Panasonic's raid into rugged cameras is highly likeable making it competent and in line with Pentax, Olympus, and Canon models.

The external part of the TS2 has a rugged look to it and a body made of stainless steel. The 2.7 inch LCD display is covered by a rubber padding throughout the lock points, thus safeguarding the monitor. That same rubber padding also protects the memory card/battery door and HDMI/USB camera outputs. On the doors are carbon resin rings making sure that no elements invade the inside of the TS2. On top of the TS2 are three buttons that includes the power button, the shutter release, and the zoom lever.

On the rear, right side of the camera is the mode wheel which allows you to select auto mode, scene modes, and Intelligent Auto. There is also the four way-controller with a menu button in the middle that allows you to access the EV and self-timer among other things. A devoted button for movie and video that brings about HD video capture can also be found on this side of the camera. Other buttons comprise the playback button, a Display button for changing the settings of the LCD display, and a Quick Menu button that allows control for white balance, image quality settings, and auto focus modes to name a few. The camera feels durable, solid, and all set for any kind of weather. The hollow on the front creates a perfect position for your right hand fingers to hold on to but take note that using the camera with both hands might be a problem.

Menus of the camera are not difficult to maneuver, particulary if you are accustomed to Panasonic's menu system. The Panasonic TS2 provides some command in terms of setting the manual like altering the speed of the camera's shutter in advancements of the fastest 1/125 second to 1 second. However, there is really no manual control. Auto, Intelligent Auto, and Scene modes are some of the preferences on the mode dial. The High Dynamic mode is a newly added feature under Scene modes for acquiring scenes with fair to middling exposures regardless of scenes that has both bright and dark areas.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 has 14 megapixel resolution as compared with its predecessor, the TS1 which only has 12.1 megapixel. Some of the prominent features of this camera comprise an admirable 28mm equivalent wide angle of view, and a 128mm of telephoto focal length. Its 4.6x optical zoom can go substantially distant and wide shots which is a nice range for a point and shoot camera. Its fast Sonic Speed AF feature provides a 0.28 second telephoto images and 0.24 seconds for wide-angle shots. Another thing to brag about the TS2 is the shutter lag as fast as 0.005 seconds. The camera's immediate reaction makes it easier to acquire abrupt pictures. Battery life is extended up to 360 shots (CIPA) per a single charge with the Venus Engine HD II feature.

If taking shots in a controlled environment, the TS2 produces a more than average still image and video. The pictures and videos are impressive with no manifestation of degradation using standard colored mode at default settings in auto. When speaking of saturation and dynamic range , the natural mode gives the most accurate and solid images appearing to surpass the standard colored mode. Fairly decent images were produced with default settings, including automatic shooting. If shooting in extreme light , there's a big chance that the TS2 will produce too soft and drowned out pictures. All in all, the images are a bit soft and sharpening is required to see the real potential of the pictures.

Seven different color modes are available in the TS2 that consist, Vivid, B/W, Standard, Natural, Sepia, Cool and Warm. Vivid does not oversaturate and produces a quite unchanging image not like the other colors. B/W and Sepia provides a likeable monotone color copy while warm produces an admirable film feel. Pinhole and High Dynamic Range (HDR) are added under scene modes. The TS2 only used Intelligent Multiple area metering to light meter for exposure. It does work good however it would be better if there are more metering options. For white balance, there are five selections, auto white balance, daylight, cloudy, shade and incandescent. If taking pictures in a well-lit environment, WB can produce the fancied white for a picture.

This camera is armed with an ISO scale from 80-1600. From 80-200, there is little or noise at all but if it goes beyond or moved to 400, little grains are visible penetrating the frame. ISO 800-600 are not recommended because pictures are damaged by grains. This might be the effect from the 1/2.33-inch image sensor with a resolution of 14.1 megapixels, which has a progressively excessive amount of pixel density on this diminutive sensor.

The TS2 can record high definition video in AVCHD Lite in addition to Motion JPEG images. With the Intelligent Resolution technology, the quality of the pictures are considerably improved. Another great feature is the Dolby Digital Creator for recording high quality audio. O.I.S. or Optical Image Stabilizer aids in avoiding handshake especially in using zoom or in taking shots in low light situations. Its Face Detection Technology, Intelligent Exposure, and Intelligent Scene Selector helps optimize the picture quality which is commendable.

The newly added Intelligent Resolution technology (iA) is always prompted in iA mode making a higher quality and more apparent pictures and movie. Once in iA mode, AF Tracking, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector and Intelligent Exposure performs automatically so you can take a shot without the need to alter the settings whenever there is a change in condition. This makes photographing enjoyable, bother-free and satisfactory when capturing vibrant, beautiful images. Also in Intelligent Resolution is a colour mode option called the Happy Mode. This feature enhances colour, brightness and saturation for pictures and videos to become more brilliant.

This camera supports SD/SDHC Memory Card and the next-generation SD format SDXC (SD eXtended Capacity). The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is compatible with the Microsoft's new operating system, windows 7. Still images and videos recorded in AVCHD Lite on SD Memory Cards can be viewable on a Panasonic VIERA TV. A software PHOTOfunSTUDIO 5.0 HD Edition is also added when purchasing this camera making it easier to view and edit. There is also an option to either upload the videos to YouTube or burn them to a DVD disc for filing.
